Recognizing the Warning Signs: How You Can Help Prevent Suicide

Date: 09/25/24

September is Suicide Awareness Month, a time for us to come together and focus on preventing suicide. Whether it’s a family  member, friend, or neighbor, knowing the warning signs can help save a life.

Common Warning Signs of Suicide

People who are thinking about suicide often show signs in their  words and actions. Knowing these signs is the first step to helping someone in trouble.

What They Might Say:

  • Talking about suicide or trying to attempt suicide
  • Feeling hopeless or trapped
  • Experiencing unbearable emotional or physical pain
  • Saying they feel like a burden
  • Talking about death or showing interest in it

Changes in Behavior:

  • Pulling away from family, friends, or activities
  • Drinking or using drugs more
  • Ignoring their appearance or hygiene
  • Giving away their favorite things
  • Sudden mood changes, rage, or risky actions

If someone you know shows these signs take them seriously. Reach out and offer support. The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is open 24/7 for immediate support.

How You Can Help

If you are worried about someone don’t be afraid to ask if they are thinking about suicide. Here’s how you can help:

  • Ask Directly: It’s okay to say, “Are you thinking about suicide?”
  • Listen: Let them talk about their feelings without  interrupting or judging.
  • Encourage Professional Help: Offer to help them connect with a counselor or therapist.
