Cervical Cancer: Two Simple Steps to Help Prevent It
Date: 01/06/26
January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month and taking action is easier than you think.
Every year, more than 13,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with cervical cancer. The good news? Most cases can be prevented with two simple steps: HPV vaccination and routine screening.
Why Cervical Cancer Prevention Matters
Cervical cancer is caused by certain types of HPV (human papillomavirus) a very common virus.
- Most people who are sexually active will get HPV at some point.
- In many cases, the body clears HPV on its own.
- When HPV does not clear, it can lead to cell changes that may become cervical cancer over time.
Prevention works and early action can save lives.
Step 1: Protect Kids and Teens with the HPV Vaccine
The HPV vaccine helps protect against cancers caused by HPV later in life. It works best when given before exposure, which is why it’s recommended for kids and teens.
What to do now:
- Ask your child’s doctor about the HPV vaccine at their next checkup
- Schedule a wellness visit if your child or teen is due for vaccines
Extra Peach State Health Plan perk:
You may qualify for a fitness-related voucher when a child ages 6–18 completes a wellness visit and recommended vaccines (including HPV). Rules apply.

Step 2: Stay on Track with Cervical Cancer Screening
Cervical cancer screening can find changes early before cancer starts.
Screening may include:
- A Pap test (Pap smear) to look for abnormal cells
- An HPV test to check for high-risk HPV types
If you are ages 21–64, talk with your provider about:
- When you’re due
- Which screening is right for you
