Peach State Health Plan and Goya Foods Explore Healthy Cultural Dishes
Free seminars teach skills to make lower-sodium meals to help reduce disease
September 11, 2017 (Atlanta, Ga.) – Peach State Health Plan is working with Goya Foods to produce a Cultural Health & Wellness Fair. In addition to free health screenings provided by Peach State Health Plan, there will be free seminars and fun physical activities available for kids and adults, and Goya Foods will be providing cooking demonstrations and tastings of their Better For You low-sodium products and MyPlate recipes. Taking place on Saturday, September 16, 2017, there will be wellness experts and food demonstrations that explore the intersection of culture, nutrition, and health. The fair will be open from 12:00 – 5:00 p.m. at Plaza Fiesta, 4166 Buford Hwy NE, Atlanta, GA 30345.
Attendees can meet with representatives from Peach State Health Plan to discuss available screenings and ways to improve their health. Atlanta actor Tony Guerrero will join as a special guest, along with Meriterese Racanelli, M.S., R&D Food Scientist/Nutritionist from Goya Foods. Ms. Racanelli will teach health seminars and cooking classes that provide lower sodium cultural recipes. People who attend her workshops will receive a Free “Goya MyPlate Recipe in a Bag” containing Goya low-sodium ingredients and a MyPlate recipe card. Peach State Health Plan will provide the fresh produce in the MyPlate recipe bag.
“Excess sodium in the diet can negatively affect blood pressure, heart, kidneys, diabetes, skin, and weight too.” said Racanelli. “But there are delicious ancestral foods, MyPlate recipes, and easy tips to do at home, grocery stores, and restaurants, that can help reduce sodium and the risk of disease.”
As part of Peach State Health Plan’s ongoing “Eat Well. Live Well. Be Well” initiative, the Cultural Health & Wellness Fair will provide complimentary blood pressure and glucose screenings, while other vendors educate attendees on a variety of services that are available. Peach State Health Plan’s Mobile Food Market will also be present to distribute health information and display Goya’s MyPlate nutrition education videos which coincide with the Center’s For Disease Control Sodium Reduction Initiative and MyPlate portion control health campaign.
“A balanced and nutritious diet lays the foundation for a healthy lifestyle; and what better way to encourage better eating than to showcase delicious, healthy meals.” said Idalia Gonzalez, M.D., senior medical director, MED Medical Affairs, Peach State Health Plan. “Our partnership with Goya proves that cultural foods can be nutritious and eating healthy doesn’t have to be complicated. It’s a valuable first step in taking charge of your health.”
